Marie H. Ruettgers

Sioux Falls, SD and Sioux City, IA Human Resources Attorney

Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers is Partner and Managing Attorney for the Goosmann Law Firm’s Sioux Falls Location. Marie is experienced, ready and willing to handle employment litigation and human resources advising, and represents companies and staffing agencies in HR disputes. She helps companies through HR consulting, discrimination defense claims, non-compete agreements, and hiring and firing guidance. Through Goosmann Law Firm’s Cyber Law Counsel, Marie also helps companies protect their property, resources, clients and name against cybercrimes, particularly among businesses handling private consumer information such as banks, finance companies, credit card processors, or health care providers.

Marie became an attorney because she was fascinated by labor laws and their effect on businesses.

“Litigation is a game of strategy that appeals to my competitive instincts.  While winning is the ultimate goal, cases are won and lost in pretrial preparation.  Just like athletes must practice and prepare for games, pretrial work sets the stage for a successful outcome,” says Marie.

Cyber liability is an exciting and emerging area of the law that appeals to Marie because of her past experience helping businesses manage crisis situations while minimizing financial exposure.

Marie is an accomplished professional responsibility attorney who helps both professionals and the public understand if licensing obligations have been met. The Ethical and Professional Responsibility Rules govern the ethical standards of all licensed professionals, such as attorneys and doctors. Professionals may be disciplined for bad conduct such as mismanaging a case or mishandling a client’s financial resources, which could put a black mark on their record.  As an ethics Attorney, Marie is willing and able to handle any Disciplinary Board complaints that you may be facing, as evidenced by her recent successful ruling from the Disciplinary Board of the South Dakota Bar Association.

Marie’s favorite thing about being a lawyer is legal research. She gets great satisfaction from researching the law and finding creative ways to use it to her client’s advantage. Marie is a contingency planner.  For any given situation she faces, Marie can generate multiple strategies to obtain a specific goal by anticipating and planning for a variety of obstacles.  Problems, emergencies, and crises are simply obstacles to her; Marie has never met an obstacle she couldn’t figure out how to overcome or eliminate.

Something you may not know about Marie is that she is a home improvement junkie.  In her free time you are likely to find her building a picket fence, tiling a backsplash, or laying a tile floor. As a child, Marie enjoyed taking her mother’s vacuum cleaner apart and putting it back together again.
